What Is Generative AI? A Plain-English Introduction
Generative AI is software that creates new content, such as text, images, code, or audio, based on patterns it learned from large amounts of data. Tools that write replies, summarise documents, or draw pictures from a description are all examples.
How does it work?
A text-based model is trained on huge amounts of writing. During training it learns statistical patterns about which words and ideas tend to go together. When you give it a prompt, it builds a response one piece at a time, predicting what is likely to come next.
This is why it can write fluent text on almost any topic. It is also why it does not “know” things the way a person does. It produces plausible output, which is not always correct.
What it is good at
- Drafting and rewriting text, and fixing grammar.
- Summarising long documents.
- Explaining concepts in simpler words.
- Suggesting code and finding likely causes of errors.
- Brainstorming ideas and outlines.
Where it goes wrong
- Made-up facts. Models can state false information with great confidence. This is often called hallucination.
- Out-of-date knowledge. A model only knows what was in its training data, unless it can look things up.
- Bias. Models can reflect biases found in the data they learned from.
- Mistakes in code and maths. Output can look right and still be wrong.
Using it responsibly
- Check important facts against reliable sources before you rely on them.
- Test any code before you use it, and understand what it does.
- Protect privacy. Do not paste passwords, personal data, or confidential business information into a tool unless you understand how it handles that data.
- Respect copyright and honesty. Follow the rules of your school, workplace, or publisher about AI-generated work, and say when you used it if that is expected.
- Keep learning. Use AI to help you understand, not to skip understanding.
Writing better prompts
Clear instructions give better results. State the goal, give context, say who the audience is, and describe the format you want. If the first answer is not right, refine your request instead of starting again.
The bottom line
Generative AI is a powerful assistant, not an expert you can trust blindly. Learn the basics, stay curious, and always apply your own judgement.
